I ordered this from Amazon UK to be able to thought this prior to its release date. I was not disappointed! Sadly, I had to peer it by myself because my husband didn’t reflect he’d like it. He would have been unfavorable, by the map. It was heavenly in every procedure.

I watched it over 2 nights. It’s a 5 hour miniseries and it is broken up into five 1 hour-long episodes.

The first 3 hours were very very pleasant. Trustworthy, even. But the last 2 hours were absolutely perfect.

In Cranford, we meet many of its residents with most of the focus on 2 spinster sisters and their surrounding friends and relatives. Everyone is kind here and scrutinize out for their neighbors and generally want to live correctly and do the apt thing. Their village has been like this for ages and the citizens have all known eachother since birth. It is an idyllic dwelling and a tickled status. They welcome recent residents, too, with every bit of friendliness.

Cranford has existed in the same draw for years, even though times are changing. A railroad may approach through the town and most residents are against this type of change. For with the definite changes– such as information, goods, and knowledge, there would also be negative changes– more transients, less safety, etc.

The intertwined account lines here involve the two sisters, class distinctions, entitlements and expectations, a very humorous appreciate triangle, and accepting change and modernity.

One of the best stories involves the young son of a poacher (one who kills animals on others’ land) . The manager of the aristocrat’s astronomical estate takes the young boy under his sail and wants to snarl him to read and write. The aristocratic Lady finds out and believes that those of this underclass should not attempt to learn skills outside their “class”. Maybe worse, the boy’s father finds out of the boy’s desire to read and also disapproves. We obtain out later that the Lady isn’t cold-hearted. On the contrary. She’s kind-hearted and fleshy of hurt, yet it’s difficult for her to behold the times are changing and that some of her ways must change, too.

When a recent sparkling doctor moves to town, he immediately falls for Sophy. Sophy returns his admiration, yet so do 2 others who misunderstand his general kindness for more romantic intentions. This culminates in expected confusion, but the outcome is overjoyed at the waste.

Those watching Cranford from the beginning may recall it to be an musty chick-flick. It’s really not, though. It does focus on the women of Cranford more than the men, but the stories depicted harmful gender lines. Change– industrialization– is the antagonist here, along with apprehension of change. However, as current medical practices build several lives, and a member of the trade class saves a member of the Upper class, it’s also determined that change, by itself, isn’t dreadful. It can be definite for everyone keen.

This is a amazing series. The only disappointment was that it was only five hours! I definitely could have watched another few episodes with the same interest these five held. Beautifully acted, filmed, and scored. The entire film was thoroughly delectable.

What a incredible, rich and cozy experience, but you’ll have to wait and examine what the cat does with the lace. It’s the funniest bit I have seen in a BBC film yet! While this film has not been shown on American TV as yet I was lucky enough to stumble across the entire film on youtube where it was shown in 9 little segments. Its a aloof film with rich and fantastic characters long remembered. I was troubled that Judi Dench would overpower her role but nothing like it. She was perfect in her poignantly shaded but joyfully rising role. It’s about the town Cranford, that is jumpy of changes being brought by the arrival of the railway. No one of course wants the charm of Customary English ways to change and one gets very attached to the warm and gloomy and comical and laughable characters in Cranford. Cranford really is a state one wishes to live and to never leave nor have change. I loved it, anglophile that I am, so this is a creation made unprejudiced for me and I can’t wait to maintain it when it is released. Another pretty English costume romance by the people who really know how to do it well!! BRAVO!!!

I have been familiar with this film since I worked for Disney in 16mm film distribution in the 1970s. I started at Disney after fair coming aid from Europe, so the French settings were nice to revisit.

I am very familiar with the various negatives of this film. I agree with several reviewers that a DVD should own the best possible record and sound element. It should also show the film in its modern, projected aspect ratio, which for BON VOYAGE was 1:85.1 (Academy ‘flat’) which gives the film a puny, rectangular image. However, burly frame, 4 by 3 transfers of 1:85×1 pictures are not necessarily all that terrible. You loose a limited relate on the sides, but not really that mighty. Some work could have been done on color correcting, although the DVD’s ‘look’ exactly matches the projected film.

I also agree that a few ‘extras’ would have been nice, even impartial the theatrical trailer. Walt Disney filmed ‘everything’ to do with his studio’s product, so there must be a capable amount of ‘extras’ for BON VOYAGE in the Disney film vaults. Why aren’t they included?

Anyway, it’s composed nice to have this some-what overlong film succor on the market. I grabbed a copy at BestBuy as soon as I spotted it. I have always felt that it was about 20 minutes too long, and that it incorporated two scenes (Fred McMurray and the French prostitute in Paris, and the attempted extortion of son Elliot on the Riviera) that should not have been in the script. The film might have done better with its intended audience. Tommy Kirk’s performance as Elliot, however, is a treasure; he was a very polished actor, and gave fantastic comical relief it wasn’t ‘mugging’ but was built solely out of his character.

Look for one mistake the current director made, and it’s in the fresh negative, although it shouldn’t have been included. When McMurray punches the Casanova in the casino at the film’s destroy, immediately go frame by frame for a few seconds and you can explore the sound stage floor, complete with ladders for the cameras, and even some of the crew in the background.

Some of the scenes bettween McMurray and James Callan (father to young suitor) unruffled resonate even in today’s society. And McMurray lost in the Paris sewers is calm very amusing.

The genuine star of this movie was the primitive ocean liner SS UNITED STATES. Parts of the film were shot aboard this gargantuan ship www.ssunitedstates.org. This is another Disney family film in the tradition of the Swiss Family Robinson & That Darn Cat. A bit dated for new kiddies but this film was Disney’s most UNDER-RATED film.

This review refers to the Dreamworks Doby Digital Edition…..

Based on accurate events, Steven Spielberg and Debbie Allen collaberate to bring us one of the many heartwrenching stories of the problem of Africans, during the illegal slave trade of the 1800’s.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Amistad! Click Here

A group of African people who were brutally draggged from their villages are being transported for slave trade. Only brilliant that they are chained and mistreated one man, breaks loose and leads a rebillion against the ship’s crew. In order to ensure their believe freedom they must prefer the lives of their captors. They are discovered in American waters, and a trial ensues as to the quiz of abolish.

It becomes an international case. Everybody from the queen of Spain to the owners of the ship “Amistad” are claiming ownership of these men and women. Being pre-civil war, the abolishionists are also making a case for their freedom. This is a case that could lead America one step closer to Civil War.

One property lawyer who has never worked on a case of this proportion, takes on the task of trying to note that these are not plantation slaves, but citizens of Africa taken by force and did what they needed to do to be free, as any American would do the same. His task is a difficult one,but as the tragic yarn of these people unfolds he is able to do on his defense. They also score some benefit from the ex-president John Quincy Adams, whose eloquence puts the Declaration of Indepence to the test.

This is a exquisite allotment of cinema in all respects. Spielberg brings to our attention yet another valuable section of history that was cruel and inhuman, one of American history that we were hardly aware of.It is an anecdote film that will wash over you with several different emotions, and you will want to discover it again and again.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Amistad! Click Here

No tremendous introduction needed for most of the cast who seemed perfectly fitted to their roles. Matthew McConaughey outstanding as the lawyer, Sir Anthony Hopkins is luminous as Adams, Morgan Freeman and Stellan Skarsgard are totaly believable as the abolishionists, and Pete Postlethwaite perfect as the lawyer for the prosecution. Also in a helpful performance is Djimon Housnsou as Cinque, the spokesperson for the Africans. His portrayal of the enslaved man who only wants his freedom will captivate you.I must also originate mention of Nigel Hawthorn and David Paymer for their unbelievable performances. The cinematography is breathtaking. The music scored by John Williams and especially the African music will conclude with you long after the movie. You will also be impressed with the costume designs. The film was nominated for four Academy awards, including one for Best Supporting for Hopkins.

The DVD is top quality. The Widescreen(Anamorphic) gives us an extraordinary concept of everything going on in the courtroom scenes and on the ocean voyages. The represent does justice to the mountainous cinematography. It is determined and crisp, colors are vibrant. Nighttime scenes are sparkling as well. The 5.1 Dolby Dig surround fills the room. It can also be viewed in the 2.0 stereo. The special features, including a tedious the scenes featurette are informative as well as arresting. There is closed captions if needed.

You will not be dissapointed with either the film or the DVD transfer, it is one that will be a big addition to your collection. Observe it again and again…….Laurie

also available in this Spielberg 2 pack:Saving Private Ryan/Amistad

Have the critics of this film’s historical “accuracy” never heard of “dramatic license”? If they had, then they would understand that Spielberg, like most of his profession, slightly alters history to effect for greater theatrical finish or even heighten the events of the account. “Amistad” achieves both with scenes of apprehension combined with those of stout poignancy that construct for a total movie experience.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Amistad! Click Here

While there are times when the film drags, the performances and the bright myth itself fabricate up for the few inadequacies. Though stars Morgan Freeman (especially riveting in the inspection of the Amistad scene), Anthony Hopkins, and Matthew McConaughey accomplish well in their respective roles, the best acting belongs to Djimon Hounsou, Razaag Adoti, and Abu Bakarr Fofanah as three of the Africans, and the underrated Pete Postlethwaite as prosecutor Holabird. Nigel Hawthorne, as the inept President Van Buren, and Peter Firth as a conscious-ridden British ship captain are also memorable.

Spielberg skillfully balances a movie that is a courtroom drama mixed with an indictment against the slave system of America’s past. The scenes of the events of the cursed “Middle Passage” are as graphic as is possible within the confines of Hollywood filmmaking.

John Williams contributes a attractive and understated net, honest below the surface of the on-screen events, providing honest enough to carry the record along.

This box site is in fact NOT the official 3 Ninjas Trilogy. The official order of the trilogy is as follows; 3 Ninjas (1992), 3 Ninjas Knuckle Up (shot befriend to help with the first movie also in 1992 but not released until 1995), and 3 Ninjas Kick Assist (1994) . This advertised box residence includes the three sequels but not the fresh 3 Ninjas film. Read my separate reviews for each 3 Ninjas movie for more information. I hope this is good.

I am a hug fan of the 3 ninjas, I unprejudiced don’t understand why they would earn a “trilogy” of a 4 allotment movie series. This dwelling contains Kick Abet (movie 2), Knuckle Up (movie 3), and High noon at Mega Moutain (movie 4), but some how they neglected the first movie. All on all this is a titanic state, it is fun to search for them again. For some reason the 3 kids shown on the veil of Knuckle Up aren’t even in the movie, but it is better because this on has the 3 main characters assist in there roles from the first movie.

I started looking at Soul Order in the early 70’s. I opinion I was going to witness the dancers talk about their Soul Articulate experiences and ogle flashbacks from the note. This was bad..PLEASE DO NOT End YOUR MONEY. Children and weak dancers are performing dance routines (badly) . There’s also a grisly dance note. Imagine if your ghetto classmates decided to have a prom reunion…this is mighty worst

I am so ecstatic I had an opportunity to finally collect my DVD, its a very capable video. Its for the whole family…I saw some of my accepted friends from when I obsolete to be on the prove….that I have not seen in a long time. so great to see; it kept me entertained until the slay…..I can’t wait until the next party…..it was worth waiting for….finally, I can’t fill there were so many novel dancers there doing their thang, They really looked safe out there.

Finally this astronomical mini series is coming out on DVD. I first saw it on EWTN and then found a copy on VHS and peep it all the time. Even though this series came out in 1983, it is timeless in its telling of the incrediable life of this gigantic saint. It is intellectual in the portrayal of Teresa and the world she lived in. Concha Velasco is shimmering as Teresa, revealing to us a saint that was both very human and at the same time a colossal mystic. She shows us a woman who was struggling with inner demons as her spiritual vocation was evolving towards the union she shared with her God as well as the difficulties of the era she lived in and the re-organization of the Carmelite order she was a fraction of and that had turned away from its current austere charisma. She found herself with enemies on both sides of the spectrum, from the laity as well as her enjoy religious communities. Only a few churchmen and nuns along with St. John of the Improper understood her mission. Another enemy fighting against her was her bear body as she was always sickly throughout her life, getting worse as she grew older. For anyone eager in the life and spirituality of Teresa of Avila, this series is for you.

This is without doubt the best miniseries I’ve ever seen and I would daresay the best ever made. Concha Velasco brilliantly portrays the sizable 16th century Carmelite mystic and saint. Her portrayal brings out the warmth, humor, humility, hard-headed approved sense and improbable spiritual depth of this improbable woman who is also one of my common saints. All the actors are helpful, as is the writing, the production values, sets, costumes, direction - everything. For those who reflect a memoir about a nun several hundred years ago would be tiring,, contemplate again. This record has passion, intrigue, suspense - even an noxious queen - the Princess of Eboli. But above all it is an astonishing legend of what God can do with someone who gives herself completely over to His guiding hand. I cannot recommend this film highly enough!

Compare Prices on Videodrome - Criterion Collection

Videodrome is not only one of the top three horror/sci-fi movies made in the last 25 years it also has the distinguishing trait of having been given one of the best royal treatments from Criterion. If you need basic residence and such watch elsewhere. This review is more about why this is one of the greatest films of all time.

First, the film: A must-have for any film collector, not objective a fear or sci-fi buff. James Woods plays a Cable-TV set owner who broadcasts soft-porn and adult entertainment. His celebrated technician shows him a pirated TV reveal called Videodrome in which people are tortured and killed. Woods pursues this expose, watching more and more of it until his investigations lead him to two sources: The Videodrome present producers itself and the show’s arch-enemy, The Cathode Ray Mission. Woods discovers that the present transmits a signal that creates a tumor in the brain that leads to S+M hallucinations. Woods begins to hallucinate fabulous sexual/violent nightmares ( the rotund TV situation) and finds himself as a pawn between the two entities. Videodrome plans on using Woods’ dwelling to transmit the violent Videodrome display in order to extinguish the audience of porn. Videodrome owner Barry Convex “programs” Woods to ruin his partners at the situation and the Cathode Ray Mission Leader, Bianca O’Blivion. Bianca “counter programs” Woods into killing the Videodrome people. Bianca declares that Woods has “evolved” (Darwinism on its ear) into The Current Flesh, an allegory of an information-age human with a body that mutates via hallucination. In the destroy, Woods, alone and his head filled with tumors, is prompted by his now dreary girlfriend (Deborah Harry in the flesh TV situation) to “evolve” into the next stage by shooting himself. Woods kills himself exactly as the full TV place instructs him to do, declaring: “Long live the Novel Flesh.”

Cronenberg gathered many parts of a script and ideas together to originate a reach avant-garde film that uses TV and fanatical programmers as villains. This movie sets the thriller basis for which The Matrix and The Ring would so heavily borrow from. Cronenberg’s come is different from his previous film SCANNERS in that the protaganist’s perspective (a colossal James Woods) becomes the trusty subject of the movie. Since Videodrome has probably been seen my almost everone who reads this I need not bother to summarize the state any further. Suffice to say that what starts out as an already involving and curious portrait of a soft-porn Cable-TV spot owner looking for the next large thing in the adult entertainment world evolves into a nightmare that relentlessly never eases until the very last frame. This psychotic world and body (called The Fresh Flesh) that Woods now finds himself becomes an allegory for our dependance and adhearance to Media and TV in particular. The concepts of “downloading” and “programming people” was, benefit in 1981, revolutionary. Kafka meets Tom Edison. The villains are evangelical and are either using the cancer-tumor inducing “videodrome” signal to waste sinners (Barry Convex looks like Jimmy Baker) or, in a twist of Darwin, the Cathode Ray Mission using the signal to “evolve” people to the next set of our existance: a personified information society of hallucinating, mutated people. This film was ahead of its time by decades and is unruffled a valuable movie using TV/Media as the vehicle for colossal unfriendly, as prompted by an already receptive audience. Cronenberg suggests that we have created a TV Pornographic Frankenstien that is out of control.

The DVD: Two discs, both principal. The commentary from Cronengerg and James Woods is particulary entertaining. Deborah Harry comments as well. The extras on Disc two feature honorable interviews with the special effects team, and a TV interview prove from Canadian TV with John Carpenter, John Landis, and Cronenberg. The making of film is marvelous and the genuine torture and porn videos shot especially for the film are fair bizzare to contemplate, and they are provied with commentary. The DVD case is made to gaze like a betamax cassette that reads: Long Live the Novel Flesh. I cherish this movie, I always have. Yes, it has dated a diminutive bit, but its one of those few movies that gets better with age. In fact, the dating of the effects adds significance to the visionary dread view itself, light years ahead of its time. This is Cronenberg’s masterpiece and everyone associated with it can think themselves lucky. Execute yourself among these lucky and earn this DVD region.

The TV producer Max Renn (James Woods) works for a sleazy TV network that focuses on violence, sex, and other bizarre programs. Max’s job is to search and pick up programs that sustain pushing the aggressive nature of the network and can maintain the viewer numbers up. Years of exposure to violence and sex have diminished the attain that the brutality and sexuality have on Max. As a result Max continues to search for something rough and more sadistic, and through an employee of the network he finds a pirate cable indicate, Videodrome.

The nature of the Videodrome is as Max refers to it as, “It’s unprejudiced cancel and torture. No area. No characters.” It is the cutting edge, no pun intended, of cable TV for Max as it is rougher and more brutal than anything else that he has seen. Max tapes the demonstrate and becomes fixated with the pirated shows. This also begins to affect Max’s social life as he meets Nicki (Deborah Harry) with whom he initiates a sadistic romance. Max begins to track the source down for Videodrome, which initially seems to be sent from Malaysia. However, further investigation leads Max to Pittsburgh, and he realizes that it is connected with a nightmarish cult.

David Cronenberg creates a ghastly atmosphere where reality and delusions start to blend. This shadow land draws the audience into a paranoid cinematic experience where the threat is located directly in front of them, the television. The exceptional special effects are a mammoth portion of creating the bizarre atmosphere, which are startling with the breathing video tapes, inaugurate stomachs, and a sensually involving television. Videodrome carries Cronenberg’s distinctive insignia as it is unusual, disturbing, and groundbreaking. As usual with Cronenberg, his films always perform room for cerebral participation and reflection as there are always several messages, which can be seen in other films by Cronenberg such as Spider and Naked Lunch. When Videodrome’s raze credits roll over the camouflage the audience will have experienced a truly original film, which will cause considerable room for debate and pondering.

Here’s a movie for dog lovers, the elderly, children of divorce, FOBs (Friends of Birds), worn Boy Scouts, people yearning for adventure, and anyone who has ever loved… and lost. Up is for everyone. It made me laugh out loud, and it made me sob.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Up! Click Here

I notion it would be tough for Up to match the emotional power of Wall-E. The two Pixar films are similar in their lack of dialogue in the first act, which helps deepen the emotional impact. Up begins with Carl, a skittish young boy star-struck by a renowned explorer; and kookie Ellie, who has a similar obsession. The two kids become rapidly friends, and assure to one day recede to Venezuela’s Paradise Falls. After getting married, they select their dream home and fix it up, hoping to possess it with children. Carl and Ellie’s life together from childhood through mature age is depicted, silently, with delicacy and subtlety. The first 15 minutes is like a celebration of a overjoyed marriage, and you truly feel Carl’s afflict when he is left alone. He sits slumped in his chair, talking to the house as if it is the missing Ellie.

When developers terminate in on Carl’s beloved home, he decides to fulfill his promise to Ellie and proceed to Paradise Falls. A veteran balloon vendor, Carl lifts his home with hundreds of brilliant balloons. Stowing away on the porch is Russell, a fleshy, daring kid trying to gather a scouting badge.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Up! Click Here

After landing in Paradise Falls, the aged man and the small boy are joined by a golden retriever named Dug who can talk with his collar, and a broad rare bird that bonds with Russell (he names her “Kevin”) . Dug is priceless: spot-on for every dog that ever lived, including an obsession with squirrels. Through a series of discontinuance calls and adventures, the quartet vanquishes a villain, saving the day. And Russell earns his scouting badge.

In the process, Carl learns to let go of his murky mourning for Ellie, and live life again. When this happens, a truly magical thing happens. Before, Carl’s craggy face is gray and monochromatic. At the moment of his transformation, Carl’s face is awash in color, and he is surrounded by magnificent hues. It reminded me of The Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy steps out of her gray world and into a candy-colored Munchkinland. Carl, too, enters a whole fresh world.

Up is a deeply emotional film, bulky of truth. It’s the year’s best film. Glean another triumph for Pixar.

Someday, Pixar is going to do it — they’re going to develop an emotionally uninspiring, lackluster interesting movie. But in the meantime, they’re tranquil putting out exquisite engaging movies like “Up,” which defies the usual kid-movie conventions by starring a crotchety weak man. It’s a charming, fun dinky adventure yarn with flying dogs and balloon-powered houses, but underlying it is a bittersweet tiny yarn about loss and care for.

As a child, the scared Carl Fredricksen bonded with the oddball Ellie over their shared savor of adventure, the explorer Charles Muntz, and Paradise Falls. They later married, disappear into their “clubhouse” together, and lived a long, sadly childless life together. When Ellie died, she had never fulfilled her dream of going to Paradise Falls.

Now crotchety, alone and harassed by a true estate developer, Carl (Ed Asner) is finally ordered to a retirement home. But he isn’t going quietly — instead he attaches thousands of balloons to his house and floats it away toward South America. But he accidentally takes an eager, naive Wilderness Explorer (a thinly-veiled Boy Scout) named Russell (Jordan Nagai) along for the perambulate. Awful kid was unbiased trying to rep an “assisting the elderly” badge.

And the jungle hotfoot to Paradise Falls turns out to have some surprising obstacles: a grand emulike bird that Russell names Kevin, a talking dog named Dug (”I am jumping on you, bird!”), and a mysterious ragged man who lives deep in the heart of the jungle. Turns out the musty guy is very familiar to Carl — and to purchase Kevin, he’s willing to sacrifice Carl and Russell.

Industry experts were babbling about how “Up” wouldn’t be as approved as the previous Pixar movies, because the protagonist is basically a crusty obsolete coot. Well, shows what they know. It ended up becoming one of those classic movies that somehow appeals to all ages — while the humor and action appeal to children, adults can devour Carl’s cherish for his lost wife, and his tedious realization that he’s clinging to the past.

In fact, the first ten minutes are some of the most heart-tugging, quietly bittersweet scenes I’ve seen in a long time. Without a word, they explain all the ups and downs of a realistic marriage — joys, sorrows (Ellie’s inability to have children), growing aged together, and finally loss.

But it’s not a depressing movie by any stretch — in fact, it’s like a childhood fantasy arrive to life, complete with a floating house suspended on hundreds of balloons, and biplanes piloted by a talking dog army.. Plenty of gargantuan dialogue (”Do you want to play a game? It’s called Study Who Can Go the Longest Without Saying Anything.” “Wintry! My mom loves that game!”) and an action-packed climax in an feeble airship.

Ed Asner is absolutely perfect as ubergrouch Carl — crotchety, grumpy, and certain to fulfill his wife’s lifelong dream, but gradually realizing he’s clinging to the past. Nagai is equally perfect as Carl’s polar opposite: a naive, chattery Scout who is distinct to reunite Kevin with her baby chicks. And the utterly adorable Dug and the other dogs deserve special search for. These creatures are utterly hilarious — they talk (”I hid under your porch because I esteem you”) and act the procedure dogs would if they talked. Three words: cone of shame.

The two-disc edition is going to have some very nice extras, but once again people with regular-def DVDs are going to secure shafted because the Blu-ray edition will have a bunch of unique stuff. Grr. As for this one, there’s a digital copy, the director’s audio commentary, kinda-alternate-ending “The Many Endings of Muntz,” and the documentary “Adventure Is Out There” about the research for this movie.

There are also a pair of adorable racy shorts. “Partly Cloudy” has a much-abused stork having to jabber potentially sinful baby creatures from a kind but clueless cloud. And “Dug’s Special Mission” is a sort of backstory for the adorable Dug, explaining what the heck he was doing before he met up with Carl and Russell.

“Up” continues Pixar’s running tally of gloriously absorbing, emotionally layered movies that the entire family can bask in. With that, I have only one more thing to say… SQUIRREL!

As I write this review, unprejudiced after the slay of TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES, the future of the prove is very risky. The ratings after the show’s recede to Friday night in February 2009 were never strong, although it persistently ranked #1 among shows having the largest percentage of their viewers watching via DVR. The brute fact is that TSCC did not lack for viewers; it lacked for live viewers during broadcast.

I hope very powerful for a Season Three of TSCC. This was easily one of my approved shows for the 2008-2009 season. When it was on Monday nights, I watched it live rather than either CHUCK or GOSSIP GIRL, two shows that I appreciate. When it moved to Fridays I intentionally stayed home to explore it (and then for six elegant weeks DOLLHOUSE and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, for what was perhaps the finest nights of TV I’ve ever experienced) . Although the display lagged a bit impartial after its midway point (unfortunately true when it moved to Fridays), it remained persistently sharp for the entire year. If I had access to a button that would allow me to determine between either having the upcoming film TERMINATOR SALVATION or TSCC vanishing, then we would never have the movie but would bag a Season Three of the TV series. My preference is based on a appreciate of character development and a richly articulated chronicle, neither of which is possible in a 120-minute movie. Besides, most movies fleet degenerate into a special effects extravaganza, and the previews of TERMINATOR SALVATION definitely leads one to anxiety that that is precisely what we will glean this summer.

I do have a couple of complaints with the TV series. I judge that the writers sometimes allowed it to crawl a bit in Season Two. And while I’ll grant that “Sarah Connor” was in the title and that John Connor is ultimately the crucial character in the Terminator saga, far and away the most spicy character on TSCC was Cameron. Most of the weaker episodes were valuable for having microscopic or no Cameron. Most of the truly expansive moments on the note had Cameron front and center.

Let me interrupt myself to command that if you DON’T WANT TO BE Substandard, to not read any futher!

Season One focused primarily on tracking down the possessors of a computer with an advanced AI named “The Turk” (the name alluding to a celebrated 18th century chess playing machine in the shape of a Turkish male that vanquished many opponents before it was revealed that it was a hoax, a chess master actually hiding inside the machine) . That apparently accomplished, Sarah, John, and Cameron embarked on a series of clues that led them to the ZeiraCorp, headed by a shape shifting terminator played by Garbage lead singer turned actress Shirley Manson. One of my current things about Season Two is that for nearly the whole season we are led to possess that Catherine Weaver (Manson) is an unpleasant Cyborg. After all, she kills numerous individuals and resurrects deceased ghastly Cyborg Cromartie to succor as the body for John Henry, the shipshape computer that her company is building. But in the season (series? ) finale she is revealed to be on the side of the angels. Or is she? Given an easy opportunity to raze John and Sarah, she not only does not do so, but saves their lives. And both John and Sarah seem to consume her at her word. All season long viewers had been looking forward to a Weaver/Cameron encounter, but instead we witness Weaver insisting that she is fighting SkyNet, impartial as they are. The whole spot is further complicated by Cameron apparently refusing Weaver’s offer to join her cause. The fact is that at the waste of the season Cameron and her agenda remains a total mystery.

For the past year I’ve been engaged in a detailed eye of robots in the history of legend, literature, film and television. TV robots and Cyborgs have been widely prevalent but also not terribly complex. I deeply care for a character like Sharon Agathon on BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, but Sharon is so clearly human - even if a Cyborg - that she doesn’t really challenge our opinion of human/robotic relationships. She looks like us, acts like us, and feels like us. It is difficult to say in what necessary sense that she isn’t as distinguished as a person as any human. Cameron is perhaps the most complex, titillating robot/Cyborg we’ve ever seen on TV. Summer Glau brilliantly portrays her as something both more than and less than human, something undeniably curious and “other.” She apparently lacks feelings, yet definitely has her bear motivations. She is a machine, yet at times seems eerily human, such as taking wretchedness over her toe nail polish or practicing ballet. She even tries, in one Season Two episode, to beget a friend of her possess. Seeing her form her very unusual overtures to a wheelchair saunter guy is one of the strangest things on the point to, including her telling him that the cancer that he previously suffered from has returned. Though she intends it qualified, she doesn’t steal why her telling him something that she shouldn’t be able to know and that he finds so emotionally devastating effectively ends their friendship. Even odder is that the sudden ending of their relationship seems to have no impact on her. There is absolutely no examine that within the next half-century robots will inaugurate to play an increasingly significant social role in human life. In Japan especially scientists are working hard on companion robots for children and for the elderly. It is impossible to imagine that they will not also play a role with many other humans as friends (most people deem their dogs to be friends and they can’t talk like robots are on the verge of being able to) and even romantic companions. Cameron is the only robot on TV that I know of that raises many of the questions about robot/human relations that will be increasingly pertinent in the coming decades. If TSCC is not renewed for a third season, ending Cameron’s epic will be one of the large losses on the present. At the kill of Season Two she remains a complete mystery. I personally want that mystery resolved.

Though we didn’t need additional proof of it, TSCC is yet another example of the fact that there is absolutely no connection between quality, viewership, and renewal in American television. It is further proof of fair how broken commercial TV is. The brute fact is that TV series are, from the corporate point of opinion, vehicles for commercials. If they provide a platform for a colossal number of people to look the commercials that are the economic heart of the shows, they are in the eyes of the networks colossal shows. Absolutely poor shows like TWO AND A HALF MEN or the endless police procedurals on CBS illustrate this. I’ve never seen a respected TV critic with a kind word for TWO AND A HALF MEN, yet it remains the most watched half hour comedy on television. Thus, it is the best platform for advertising. PUSHING DAISIES was cancelled at midseason despite more principal acclaim than any other series on the four major networks. Perhaps for fans of television the major networks have outlived their usefulness. If they can’t acquire a dwelling for a note as delicate as TSCC on their schedules, it is proof that TV is broken. FOX eats up tremendous gobs of its schedule with the unceasingly dreadful AMERICAN Inactive while NBC has eliminated five hours of scripted TV in the 2009-2010 schedule so that they can hand it over to the untalented and dull Jay Leno.

But it isn’t the networks that are to blame. It is the American TV viewer. As long as we tune in to AMERICAN Lazy, various reality dancing shows, TWO AND A HALF MEN, and police procedurals, they are going to support giving us crap. I am a radical on this. I actually judge that there is an ethics of TV viewing. I honestly gain it is corrupt to look 20/20 or TWO AND A HALF MEN and that it will be unconscionable to contemplate Jay Leno’s modern series. Or if you must study these substandard shows, at least DVR them. As long as they are the best vehicles for commercials, we are going to continue to lament the cancellation of the better shows and the unceasingly continuation of critically unacclaimed and artistically empty series.

The one reason for hope for TSCC is the film TERMINATOR SALVATION, which is likely to be the biggest box office hit this summer. This past year Warner Brothers negotiated a smaller licensing fee with FOX, which was a factor in its renewal. Perhaps the film in combination with a similar deal from Warner Brothers could lead to another season. We can hope.

My wife and I are picky about what we leer on TV. There are fair a few drama shows about which we care. I would burn my 65 dawdle HD-TV before I would peep one of these “reality” or American Idol type shows.

On the other hand, we can hardly wait for each recent episode of “Sarah Connor.” The actors are astounding and the characters are well developed. From the worn FBI agent to Summer Glau’s character, they do their parts so very well. If we are out of town or otherwise not home we represent the expose.

I hope the demonstrate will last a long time but I hope, while they tranquil have the actors together, whenever it leaves TV they will develop a two-hour wrap-up for big-screen movie release and not leave us hanging as some well-behaved shows have done.

I’ve bought the DVDs of the first season and will steal any future DVDs as speedily as they are available. We didn’t miss an episode because of the wonder of recording but I want them for the future. What vast TV and what gargantuan drama.

Alesha, the protagonist of this classic Russian film, is a good-hearted peasant boy fighting for his family and homeland. When he becomes an accidental hero, he is rewarded by leavetime, which he hopes to exhaust at his mother’s home in a distant village. On his content toddle through the wartorn Soviet countryside, he meets and falls in like with a young woman. Through a series of misadventures and delays, Alesha arrives home with small time to visit with his mother. Duty calls, and he must return to the front. This movie is both touching and tragic, and is beloved by Russian people, too many of whom lost sons, daughters, spouses and sweethearts during the Mountainous Patriotic War. How many mothers, like Alesha’s, waited and watched toward the west for a soldier who never returned? “Ballad of a Soldier” is a tribute to those lost loved ones who remain in their survivor’s memories forever youthful, shapely, innocent, and top-notch. To assert Soviet citizens this human emotion by relegating the film to mere “propaganda” is cynical and saddening.

Movies don’t gather any better than this one. A young Russian soldier (Alyosha) almost accidentally becomes a hero. To reward him, the General gives him a 4 day leave so he go home to repair his mother’s roof before rainy season. The movie is about his eventful drag home. You seek the horrors of war in the people Alyosha meets on his sprint home. The war itself is never far away-you can hear the accurate cry of cannon throughout.

This is also one of the most resplendent treasure stories you will ever explore. One of the people he meets on his fling home is a stunning young girl named Shura. The scene on the remark with the stout birch forest passing by in the background is the single most radiant treasure scene ever filmed. No nudity, no sex. You long for the two to kiss to consumate their like.

This is not so noteworthy an anti-war film as a film about the large human tragedy that results from war. (I’m not definite, but I consider there is a dissimilarity.) Be distinct to score the sub-titled version of the movie. I’ve seen both dubbed and sub-titled and the sub-titled is far obliging.

I can’t recommend this movie high enough. This, along with Fiddler on the Roof and The Wind and the Lion, are my all-time favorites and I wouldn’t want to try to win a common amongst the three. But if I did, I reflect Ballad of a Soldier would accumulate the nod.

By the scheme, you WILL bawl! I remember seeing it at a movie theater in Cambridge Mass. in the mid-seventies. Several people leaving at the destroy of the movie were visibly crying while proclaiming that they never scream at movies.
